Meet Mike Hoos – Retired Army Vet joins the Window Genie team!
Our last grand opening of the year!
On December 1st 2014, Mike Hoos opened his Window Genie franchise in Columbia, SC. His story is not unlike many of his fellow Window Genie franchise partners; he was moving on from his previous career in the summer of 2013 (Mike’s previous career was serving our country in the Army for 23 years) and hoped to find a way to make a living without sacrificing family stability and quality time together. The Army did do a great job preparing Mike for his retirement… they offer classes that help our service men and women successfully transition back into the civilian working world. Mike entertained the idea of starting a business at the time, but as he put it, “I just wasn’t ready for the uncertainty that goes along with business ownership.” What he was getting at was that, after 23 years of moving his family around the world, he wanted to settle down in one community at a job he knew he’d be good at, that paid well and wasn’t a huge “risk” like opening a business can be. Plus, did we mention it was Amazon.com offering him an operations position? An opportunity to work for one of the best companies in the world doesn’t come around too often!
While Mike thoroughly enjoyed working with Amazon for about a year, he began working 14-16 hour days… not exactly family friendly. He re-visited that idea of owning a business. Part of his hesitation at the time of his retirement from the Army was that he simply didn’t know enough about business to just jump in. He never lost interest in the idea, he just needed time to learn, research, converse and basically mull it over. Now that he was ready mentally and financially, with the support of his family he dove in head first; he contacted a franchise coach with The Entrepreneur’s Source and thus began his journey towards business ownership. Together they discussed Mike’s strengths, weaknesses, goals, interests… and his coach presented him with a handful of business opportunities he though best matched Mike’s wants and needs. Yes, Window Genie was one of them… and we’ll pat ourselves on the back with this one, Mike said we were “the front runner from the get-go.”
WHY were we the front runner? Our opportunity met his needs in terms of being simple, scale-able and fairly low-cost. Mike said what initially drew him into Window Genie was, “the investment was so low considering the potential for growth, but I also liked that there were a variety of services to offer meaning there is something for every home and budget. This was something I was looking for; a business that would allow me to build a loyal customer base that would repeat with us year-round. Also, still being somewhat unsure of my knowledge or abilities as a business owner, I knew a franchise with a solid support team was best for me. Window Genie’s support team seemed genuinely dedicated to each franchise partner’s success.” We hear this a lot.., “I chose Window Genie because….” and the answers are always so similar. Another thing we’re extremely proud of. Our services are in demand, our business model sets our owners up for success and our corporate team truly cares about each franchise.
Mike is excited to be the boss. “The lifestyle aspect of the business is what my family and I look forward to. As my own boss I’m able to build my schedule around family time; I’ll never have anyone asking me to come in for over-time on a Saturday or perform an emergency window cleaning on Christmas morning. I’ll be able to make all the basketball games, family dinners and weekend activities. That’s the most valuable thing Window Genie can provide for my family.”
